Quarter Book Project Tiffani Toombs Period: 4
Title: Prime Choice
Author: Stephanie Perry Moore

Summary
The reason I chose the book “Prime Choices” by Stephanie Perry Moore, is mostly because of the title itself. “Prime Choice” with that only I was hooked. After I read the back summary of the book, I knew that I could relate to the book. For instance, on the cover is a saying that states “sometimes it’s a struggle to walk the right path”. I personally think every teenager with any right intentions could relate to this.
The Genre
The genre of this book is categories as a young adult fiction book. This book fits as a young adult fiction mostly because of all the drama that takes place. I would also describe it as a young adult fiction book because of all of the experiences that the characters have, which any young adult could relate to. This book can be called a tragedy, a teen drama, or a romance. This book contains drama this is why it could be labeled as a teen drama. The book also contains some tragedy, which is found the conflict. This book has a lot of romance, which can make it a romance novel as well. This book’s many genres make the book even more interesting.

Plot
The plot of this story starts off with of Perry, the main character in the story. Perry is in his senior year of high school, and his life is close to perfect. He is the most popular kid in his grade, and is acing all of his AP classes. Perry also has college recruits knocking down his door for him to sign with them. The story begins to have problems with getting his girlfriend to move to the next level in their relationship. She can’t move on in their relationship because of her Christian beliefs, which states that you should remain a virgin until you are married. Perry is not all that happy since he knows he won’t get his needs met. Perry tries everything in his power to get her to change her mind, but she doesn’t budge. All at the same time Perry doesn’t want to displease God either, yet he still wants her, and he wants to have a relationship closer to God. Perry decides to make the decision to let Tori go. This doesn’t last long at all. The next day the football team throws a party, and invites everyone. Perry at the time is single, and he just wants to have a little fun. This is when Justin, another friend of Perry introduces him to Amandi. At first glance Perry likes what he sees, and the two of them dance the whole night. Amandi was very different from the usual girls that Perry hooked up with, it almost seemed as if she had no moral values whatsoever about herself. Amandi takes things to a whole different level when she kisses him, and the crowd begins to make a bunch of owws and awws. Perry then tries to look for Tori, but by the time he found her she had already dashed out of the door with tears in her eyes. Perry then tries to find her. He finally finds Tori, and she was devastated. They end up talking about it all, and now they are once again together.

Next, the rising action takes place on a Sunday evening; there is no school the next day because of the holiday, Columbus Day. Perry decides that he would head to the skating rink for some fall jams, but he doesn’t want to go alone. He thinks about Tori, and he makes up his mind about getting this whole virgin thing over with. Instantly, Perry packs everything from root beer down to her favorite chips. He even bothered to take his father’s love CDs to loosen up the mood. When Perry arrives at Tori’s house he is shocked to find out that his girlfriend was busy for the night. She had made up her mind that she was going to babysit. Perry tries to persuade her into coming, but she simply responds with “I’m getting paid, and I am not going to let an opportunity like this to past.” Perry then tries to force himself on her, so that she could feel how bad he wanted her, but still she doesn’t budge. Instead she tells him she will not be there, and slams to door in his face. By this time Perry is furious. As Perry drives to the skating rink, he makes up his mind that Tori wasn’t going to change his mind at all. He was still going to get what he wanted.

The three characters in this book consist of Perry, Cole, and Damarius. I also consider Tori as a main character in this story, but first let’s start with Perry. Perry is his senior year of high school, and he attends Walker High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the most popular kid in the school, and he also is the captain of the football team. Perry is also acing his AP classes. On top of it all Perry has college 80recruits that are hunting him down for him to sign with them. Perry’s personality in the story shows that he is caring and stern with his decisions. For example, in the story when Perry kisses another girl right after he broke up with his girlfriend; he goes after her to make sure she is okay. He shows this emotion many times throughout the story. It shows that he cares for his family and friends. Perry shows his stern ability when he makes up his mind that he would treat his father differently, since he cheated on his mother. Perry responds by grabbing his father’s shirt, and saying “alright you think you know me, but I ’ma lay it out for you.” After this comment with his father, he didn’t talk to him for weeks. Perry can also be very relatable to people, and what they are going through. For instance, when Perry’s best friend Damarius thinks he won’t be able to get into college. Perry takes it into his own hands, knowing his friend’s background. He takes Damarius on his college recruiting trips, so that he could get a good reputation. He also shows sympathy in the story when his best friend Cole gets his girlfriend pregnant. 304He relates to them, and he gives them the best advice.

Next, Damarius is one of Perry’s best friends the story, and he is definitely one of the main characters. Damarius in Perry’s description for him was “off the chain,” and that he was a “straight nut,” or “always clowning.” Perry also mentions how Damarius “always acted like things did not get to him”, but Perry knew that some things did. For instance, Damarius didn’t like the fact that his parents had separated, and that neither of them worked. He also didn’t like that his is younger sister got pregnant in the eighth grade, he was sad yet happy when she miscarried. However, this turned out to be a blessing. Damarius wasn’t all that smart, and even though he had some football talent, Damarius wasn’t getting the attention of the big colleges. Perry also describes Damarius as a “loud mouth,” since he usually embarrassed him and his family. In the story Damarius is a good person in general, he sticks with his friends, and he overcomes his difficulties.

Furthermore, Cole and Tori are the last two characters that I would fit the title of a main character. First, let’s start with Cole. Cole is another one of Perry’s best friends. Cole and Perry’s friendship in story in my opinion is a lot tighter than that with Damarius. I say this because in the story Damarius and Perry fought a lot, but Cole and Perry hardly ever have any disagreements. Cole also plays football; he is 6feet and 1 inch, and weighs 260 pounds. He makes C average grades, and has a few colleges’ that actually want him to sign. Cole’s home life was a little “shady.” He and his mother lived in the projects, and his mother was on and off of drugs. His father was never home. Cole was the oldest of four boys. Cole had to balance work and school to make ends meet. Cole is a very fun, and cool guy. He doesn’t make the right decisions always, but deep in his heart he is a really nice guy.

The main theme or the big idea of the story is to be careful about sex, and to be mindful that the decisions you make could possibility be permanent. In the book there are several events in which the characters make “temporary” decisions with permanent results. This book expresses this in many shapes and forms. The book also expresses the need in which you need to put God first before anything else. In the book, Perry becomes overwhelmed with many things, and he learns to put Christ before anything. After Perry does this with all of his actions, he sees improvements happen all around him. This story shows the importance of how your decisions can affect your future. It states how you should not give yourself to just to anybody. You never know that person may have, so it is best just to avoid it if possible. It is too risky, and there are so many consequences involved. The theme of this story is to always put God first before anything. This is shown in the story after Perry had come back from his Christian athletes’ trip, and he had put all of his problems into God’s hands. This is when God worked out everything for him. This book shows a lot when it comes down to making the right choices. For instance, in the story when Perry has to choose to between Christ, and sex. He remained tore between the two throughout the story. This book’s theme covers a lot, but the main theme is to “keep God first.”

The main conflict of the book begins right after Perry and his team win the city-championship. Perry and his team become very happy with their accomplishments, and they all decide to celebrate. Some of Perry’s friends decided to have a little too much fun, and they later suffer the consequences. The night after the game Perry returns home from his winnings, and he discoverers his mother crying. Perry does everything he can to make his mother confess, but just replies with, “me and your father are having problems.” Perry is now egger to find out what’s happening. The next day Perry’s friends Damarius and Cole call, and they want to celebrate by shopping. Perry wants to tag along, but he knows that his money isn’t the way it needs to be, so Perry decides to ask his father for the money. When Perry arrives at his father’s job he notices his secretary isn’t at her post, so Perry decides to go to his father’s office. To Perry’s surprise his father’s door is locked, so Perry goes to the other side to a nearby window. What Perry sees shocks him. Perry’s father and his secretary were locking lips. Perry became furious and begun to bang on the door. His father opens the door, and acts like nothing happened. Perry becomes even angrier, so he gives him one last look, and leaves. That night Damarius calls with an emergency. He tells Perry about the excruciating pain that he devolves, and how he is beginning to feel numb. Perry then rushes over to Damarius’ house where he finds him shaking. He imdediantly takes Damarius to the doctor. This is where he is diagnosed with the incurable disease Herpes. Since this is Damarius’ second disease that has caught in just a matter of weeks, Perry becomes concerned. Damarius doesn’t want to Perry in his business, and he doesn’t want to tell his girlfriend. He thinks she will leave him since it was obvious he was cheating on her. A few hours later, Cole comes rushing into Perry’s driveway. When Cole comes out of the car he begins to panic. Perry tries to ask his friend what’s wrong, but he just panics even more. Then after a few minutes later comes out and says “Briana might be pregnant!” Perry feels as if the ground underneath him as just fallen out from under him. Perry rethinks the situation, and remembers that she “might” be pregnant. The two of them then head to Brianna’s house where she had taken the test. Before Perry and Cole walk in they see Briana and Tori crying. It was official she was pregnant. Perry feels as if this is all too much, so he heads home. It doesn’t help at all that the state-champion is right around the corner. The day of state-championship an athlete’s worse nightmare happens. As Perry receives the ball two quarter backs land on him. Perry’s is now in a lot of pain. He later finds out that his knee is shattered, but that he could also recover from his injury in little to no time. By this time most of the college recruiters have lost interest in him. Almost all of the colleges expect for one that just may be his final choice.

This book reminds me of…
This story reminds me of film. I could defiantly see this novel preformed as a play, or movie. This book reminds me of a play in many ways because this book contains so much drama. This author was so brilliant to bring drama in every chapter of the book it brings excitement, and it also keeps the reader interested. You get drawn into every word, and it almost seems as if the book itself was based off of true life experiences. This book could defiantly become a movie, film, or play, and be successful. This book also reminds me of teen dramas, or one of those television sitcoms. I think that this book could also be used as a tragedy, or soap opera. The literature used in this book is southern slang, in which the characters use words like “y’all.” This book in general contains slang, and could possibly be performed as a drama, tragedy, or soap opera. The book and theater drama both have in common many things. Some of these events that contain the similarity between the two are the plot. As the plot increases or the conflict increases the level of drama increases, and this is the same with the book.
